At Sunday Assembly we refer to our special interest small groups as “smoups.” It’s a portmanteau of those two words—small & groups—and it’s just fun to say!
We have a variety of smoups, some older than others, as they are created by folks as their interests move them. Take a look at our current list, and, if you have an idea for a new smoup, feel free to propose it to the group.
Activist Smoup
NEW!
Discuss the issues and actions of the day. Make a difference.
Acoustic Smoup
We gather to play acoustic instruments and learn new songs together. Beginners and novices welcome!
Book Club
A casual book club where we choose books related to living better. Mostly.
Food Smoup
Share meals together. During the pandemic, we have gathered at outdoor restaurants.
Hiking Smoup
Get out in nature, get some exercise, and chat with fellow hikers in various East Bay parks.
Philosophy Smoup
Discussions of topics both fundamental and topical. Includes a potluck dinner. Our longest running smoup.
Leadership Meeting
Our board of directors meetings are open to all members of our Sunday Assembly community. We usually meet at 7pm the Monday evening after the third Sunday (~30 hours after our monthly celebration).
Put in your two cents, and help run this thing! See our Leaders page for more information.
The Band
To help the music along, a handful of good singers and musicians from our community practice before our monthly celebration, then lead the songs. We have fun and bring up the energy!
The band usually chooses the songs for the month, but anyone’s welcome to suggest a favorite tune. Some members even play an instrument or two (or four).
Volunteers
We’re always looking for people to help out at our Sunday Assembly monthly celebrations. This could involve welcoming and seating people as they arrive, setting up chairs, or joining in the clean up at the end.
We’re also keen to hear from people who would like to give a reading or talk at one of our celebrations or organize a smoup.
